The Early Years

Parents are a child’s first educator! At Broadfield Nursery we will collate as much information from the parents about their child on an All about me form, this information allows us to make connections between nursery and home experience.

Our daily routine enables children to play uninterrupted. We recognise the importance of extending and enhancing our children’s learning and development through real experiences, this is achieved in our holistic indoor and outdoor environments.

The nursery has two gardens that provides the children with an opportunity to learn. Our outdoor play area meets the needs of different learners in different ways.

It offers a large scale of multisensory experiences, which help the children remember and recall their learning. We know that being outside improves mental health and children’s wellbeing. Our play-based approach provides the children uninterrupted time to explore the environment, making choices whilst being supported by their practitioners, who encourage their learning and recognise Teachable Moments.

Tapestry

Throughout a child’s time at Broadfield Nursery, we celebrate each child’s unique journey through their own online Tapestry journal. Our online journals keep records of observations, achievements, accomplishments, and assessments.

Parents can access this and make their own contributions to their child’s journal by sharing achievements and experiences their child has had away from the setting.

We do “In the moment planning”

“In the moment planning” encourages our practitioners to plan around children’s interests, creating a curriculum where practitioners can support, guide, and teach children new skills and ideas.

We use” Teachable Moments”

Teachable Moments are opportunities that arise during play and exploration when a key person intentionally creates challenge, critical thinking and new ideas that bring additional knowledge to the play, situation, or experience.

The adult identifies the intention whilst observing what a child is doing and recognises that they could provide further learning as they implement their teachable moment. The Teachable Moment will provide impact, build on children’s capacity to learn, and ensure children discover and remember what they have learnt from the adult. It presents as a good opportunity for a high-quality adult - child interaction and is where learning becomes possible and achievable.

When children are happy, safe and secure they are the most receptive to learning a new concept, more information or new skill. A Teachable Moment provides the opportunity for children to build on their knowledge and adults to learn more about how children learn.

The Early Years Foundation Stage 2021. What is it?

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) 2021 is a document for us, as early year’s providers, to help us support your child’s learning and development from birth to five years old. All early year’s providers must follow the EYFS 2022.

Who makes sure that registered providers are following the EYFS 2021?

Ofsted will routinely inspect nurseries every six years following the last inspection date. Of course, other circumstances may trigger an early inspection or shorter timespan between inspections, which include:

  • Where a nursery has recently opened, they should expect to be inspected within 12 months

  •  Where a serious complaint has been made to Ofsted by either a parent, carer or member of staff

  •  Where a ‘reportable incident’ has been submitted to Ofsted by the nursery

  •  Where a nursery has received either a ‘Requires Improvement’ or ‘Inadequate’ inspection grading

Ofsted looks at four ‘Areas of Inspection’, which are as follows:

  •  Quality of Education

  •  Behaviours and Attitudes

  •  Personal Development

  •  Leadership and Management

Ofsted will grade each Area of Inspection, which will form the overall grading.

Ofsted will give a nursery setting an overall grading, which will be one of the following:

  •  Outstanding

  •  Good

  •  Requires Improvement

  •  Inadequate

  • We help develop children’s self-esteem and confidence

  •  We ensure all children are included and have access to a stimulating, varied and balanced curriculum

  • We encourage children’s independence and ability to make choices and decisions

  • We support children’s self-chosen learning by capitalising on their sense of enquiry and investigation

  • We promote a shared understanding and acceptance of diversity· We work in partnership with our families, parents and carers

  • We expect children and adults are kind, listen, empathise and cooperate with each other

What if I’m worried about my child’s development?

If you’re worried about your child’s progress, talk to your child’s key person and together you can agree how best to support your child. The keyperson will also work with our SENCO Natasha to ensure any needs are identified and supported. If your child’s home language is not English, we will give them opportunities to develop and use their home language in play and learning to support their language development at home. We will also make sure your child has enough opportunities to learn and reach a good standard in English language during the EYFS.

How can I find out more?

Talk to your child’s key person who will be happy to answer any questions you have. You can also view a copy of the Statutory and non-statutory Framework for the Early Years Foundation Stage 2021
